Next week Google is holding its developer conference Google I/O 2016. An Android VR headset is in the cards.

The Google I/O 2016 will kick off on May 18 in Mountain View, California. A week ahead of the developer conference rumors surface that Google will unveil Android VR, a new virtual reality headset. Google already brought VR to the masses with Google Cardboard. Android VR is supposed to be similar ot the Samsung Gear VR headset.

Founder of Engadget, Peter Rojas just tweeted that he heard that the Android VR will be better than Gear VR but not as good as Rift or Vive.

Update May 16: Peter Rojas clarifies his initial rumor and says now that Android VR is not a headset.

A reference to AndroidVR was also spotted in the release notes of the Unreal Engine according to 9to5Google, supporting what Peter Rojas has shared.

Android VR is bad news for Samsung, but great news for all Android users. Android VR would enhance mobile virtual reality for all Android users as the Gear VR does for Samsung smartphone owners.

The introduction of Android VR also will mean that Apple has to finally react and enable iPhone users to enter the age of Virtual Reality. Apple has been so far on the sidelines of virtual reality in the mobile and desktop area. Microsoft, Sony even HTC are fully engaged in developing gear for virtual reality. I have been through the first waves of VR, but it really seems that 2016 and 2017 will be finally make virtual reality main stream.
