The latest evidence points towards excessive folate levels during conception leading towards the birth of autistic babies.

Those females who are expecting are often given the advice by their GPs to take enough folate since it is necessary for the nervous development of the baby. Yet novel research says that in excess this nutrient can cause risk of autism in the young ones.

It is a case of too much of a good thing. Were a pregnant mother to have four times the normal level of folate in her body, the chances of her baby becoming autistic increases by more than double.

Also high vitamin B12 levels may spell trouble for the conceiving women. This vitamin in fact triples the rate for contracting an autism spectrum disorder.

The real double whammy is when both folate and vitamin B12 levels are high. Then it is a sure thing that not all is well since the baby’s chances of contracting autism increase a whopping 17.6 times the normal probability.

Folate is one of the B vitamins and it is naturally found in fruits and vegetables. The synthetic form is found in fortified breads and cereals. Also it is available in pill form which is downright unnatural.

The findings will be presented May 13 at the 2016 International Meeting for Autism Research in Baltimore.

While folic acid is a supplement for a conceiving mother, its dosage can be overdone. The deficiency is very real too and so we cannot advise mothers-to-be to completely forgo this important nutrient either.

Yet that is the precise thing that the difference between a cure and a poison lies in the dosage. Just because two pills are salubrious doesn’t mean that someone should swallow 20. That is a sure method of contracting some ailment. Optimal amounts are always best and they are the norm as well.

Folate plays a crucial role in cellular development. Also it is essential for the brain’s neurons. A deficiency of this nutrient is not something that should occur during the course of a pregnancy.

The problem is that many women’s bodies do not absorb folate very readily. Levels of this nutrient ought to be monitored very closely during pregnancy. Nobody wants their kids to have autism.

It is a scourge since the child ends up dependent on an often merciless society. Abnormalities such as social impairment, odd forms of speech and obsessive/eccentric behavior are common symptoms of autism.

It is mainly a genetic disorder but has several environmental components as well. The study involved 1391 mothers and their children. It will pave the way towards better care of mothers who are expecting.
