Recent extensive research proves that texting while driving is the worst form of distraction that can lead to crashes while driving.

Do not text and drive! Well we have heard it a lot. However these are not just words. Science has confirmed that texting is one of the worst distractions that one can have in one’s life while driving. The risks of being in a car crash increase by tenfold when the driver is texting and driving at the same time.

A recent study that involved 59 participants experimented with the driving mode while giving the drivers multiple distractions one by one. The participants were given sensorimotor sensors in order to calculate the amount of distraction one can face during driving.

The drivers had to drive through the same route in different situations. It was noted that when the drivers had no distractions, they drove in a much smoother way. It was also seen that they had a balance of sensorimotor functioning while they drove in that condition.

However, when they drove with an added distraction, say texting in this case, the result was far from normal. They had to drive on the same route while texting was added as a distraction.

The results of this drive showed that the sensorimotor responses of the drivers were not balanced. The senses that required having a steady and safe driving experience were diminished in this case.

The motions of the drivers were shaky and unstable and this resulted in loss of steering ability. It was also seen that they were preoccupied with texting which meant less concentration on driving. The jittery movements while handling the steering wheel and lesser concentration can lead to road accidents.

Thus it was concluded that texting is one of the most dangerous distractions while driving. It not only effects the drivers cognitively but physically as well.

The findings of this study are described in a paper titled “Dissecting Driver Behaviors Under Cognitive, Emotional, Sensorimotor, and Mixed Stressors,” that got published in Scientific Reports, an online open-access research journal from the Nature Publishing Group.
