GMO crops are benign like their more natural cousins and don’t affect the environment in a harmful way either. Yet the new form of food has not led to greater productivity and fertility in crops.

To add to pre-existing troubles, these GMO crops increase insect and weed resistance too. This thus causes agricultural issues to crop up in the world food distribution scheme.

Scientists are looking into the matter. To make blanket statements about the pros and cons of these GMO crops is risky business. The study into the ins and outs of GMO foods consisted of a committee of 20 individuals.

The 400 page long report on the problem took two years to reach completion. There are those who highlight the deleterious effects of GMO crops and there are those who mention their benefits.

The truth which lies in between the two poles gets lost in this war of words. On the whole, the field is a landmine of contradictions and confusing terminology.

People say that GMO crops will end world hunger once and for all. Others point out that these “Frankenstein Foods” will cause childlessness and deadly tumors in human beings.

The report is meant to clarify many points of debate so that a better judgement could be made regarding the whole issue at hand.

The committee has given its verdict that GMO crops pose no danger to human health. Yet this comes with a proviso and that is that there is no guarantee since the long term effects of GMO foods remain to be seen.

Especially, the effects on the environment are a moot point. Furthermore, whether they ought to have warning signs on them like packs of cigarettes is being pondered over.

Americans and the rest of the world’s populations want to know what lies in their food. To be ignorant of this is like playing Russian Roulette with one’s health.

Everyone has a right to his or her choice in matters of food selection. GMO crops do not increase yield though. That is a blind spot of this novel method of raising crops.

Feeding the world is a complex affair and so many people are falling through the cracks as world hunger becomes a major issue for the future. While economically viable, GMO foods are not all they are made out to be.

Science solves problems but it also has a tendency of creating ten thousand side effects in the process. Thus GMO crops are a mixed blessing at best.
