Xiaomi Drone Unveiling Is On May 25

The Xiaomi Drone will be announced at an event on May 25 in China.

The Xiaomi Mi Drone is almost here. Chinese Xiaomi has announced today to hold an event on Wednesday, May 25 to unveil the Mi Drone. Xiaomi CEO CEO Lei Jun has said earlier this month that the company will launch an UAV by the end of May.

Update: Watch the Xiaomi Mi Drone Video Teaser.

The company started to tease the company's first drone yesterday. The invite to the Xiaomi UAV event shows a black drone. It is a quad copter and the camera module has the shape of a sphere.

As reported yesterday, the Xiaomi Mi Drone can record 4K video. This important tidbit has been revealed through the Mi Drone app that briefly was available in app stores in China.

The Mi Drone is therefore not a cheap toy. The first Xiaomi Drone is likely to challenge DJI in the semi-professional mid-range. The price of the Mi drone depends highly on the key capabilities such as range.

Besides the 4K video recording feature, the Xiaomi Drone is also believed to support optical flow positioning technology. Optical flow would allow the Mi drone to automatically hold the camera onto moving objects.

Xiaomi will launch the Mi drone first in China. It could take until fall until the company will offer their drone in the United States.

The drone market is dominated by Chinese companies like DJI. Now Xiaomi is set to further enhance the drone market share of Chinese manufacturers.

Requirements to register a drone has not impacted the demand for drone as it appears. The new generation of drones get smarter and are easier to fly as drones are equipped with sensors and auto pilot features. At the same time the demand for drone defense is growing. Systems like offered by Dedrone can protect the airspace of private or corporate properties.
