Google is going to take mobile virtual reality to the next level with the Android based Daydream virtual reality platform. Daydream is not just about software, it also includes hardware.

The Daydream virtual reality hardware consists of a VR headset similar to the Samsung Gear VR and a small Daydream controller. The Google Daydream headset still requires a mobile phone as display. Initial rumors about the new Google VR headset said that it would have integrated displays.

Daydream is coming this fall to Android N phones. Smartphone makers will also release Daydream optimized smartphones going forward. Google is building a new virtual reality eco system on top of Android. Where f!@# is Apple with virtual reality? Let's hope Apple is unveiling virtual reality plans for the iPhone and Macs at the WWDC 2016 next month.

Google has pushed virtual reality out of a niche to an experience that many people already had with the genius Google Cardboard goggles two years ago. Now the quality of mobile VR will make a big jump forward with Daydream.

Recode reports that Google will indeed make Daydream hardware under its brand, but the same system will be offered by partners. It is going to be a very "Daydreamy" Holiday shopping season this year. Daydream Virtual reality gear will be one of the hottest holiday gadget gifts of 2016.
