  • Angry Birds Take Over the Box Office with a Fell Swoop

Angry Birds top the box office leaving Captain America and Neighbours 2 in tow.

The Angry Birds have stormed the box office castle with all their arsenal and conquered it. Columbia Pictures and Rovio Animation‘s The Angry Birds Movie featuring the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage has topped the box office with a strong $94 million at the worldwide box office this weekend.

Animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the 3D-animated film earned an estimated $39 million in its opening weekend across 3,932 North American theaters, for an average of $9,919 per theater.

Directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis from a script by Jon Vitti, the budget of the movie comprised totally of $73 million which was fully financed by Rovio. The movie has managed to go over $150 million worldwide.

The adaptation also left behind the Disney Marvel giant Captain America Civil War in tow in its third weekend, EW reported. This weekend however, Civil War officially became the 19th highest grossing movie of all time. This weekend alone, the movie hauled in $33.1 million domestically and $30.7 million internationally for a global weekend of $63.8 million.

Adding this weekend, the film has earned $347.4 million in North America and $706.1 million overseas for a worldwide total of $1.053 billion becoming the fourth Marvel movie to go over the billion dollars mark.

Coming in third was the sequel of the hit comedy Neighbours 2. Starring the cast from the original movie including Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron and Dave Franco; the movie featured Chloe Grace Moretz and Selena Gomez but only managed to earn a total of $30 million which is way less than the $49 million that the original movie hauled in. The production anticipated more but there is still time for the comedy to pick up till the next weekend.

The unexpected movie that did well on the box office was the Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe and Matt Bomer starrer The Nice Guys which earned $11.7 million.
