Many individuals suffering from full-fledged depression revealed all on a Twitter forum using a hashtag #MyDepressionLooksLike.

Depression is the garden variety mental illness and it is becoming more common as humanity moves into the 21st century. As a debilitating mood disorder, depression brings on bouts of sadness and melancholia that may result in suicidal behavior.

Recently, Twitter users employed a hashtag #MyDepressionLooksLike on the Larry Bird online social site to bring some much-needed attention to their mental health problem. They pointed out that despite all appearances, something was seriously wrong with a depressed individual.

In other words, you cannot just end depression by will power alone. It takes much more than that to end the sad feelings and suicidal ideation of depression which has been called the “Black Dog of the Mind”.

WHO lends us statistics which might give us a glimpse into the devastation that depression wreaks in everyday lives of people unfortunate enough to contract it.

On a global level, 350 million people suffer from this disease. Over 10% of youngsters also have it. It is very common among women. The disease is sometimes fatal since it can progress to suicidal ideation and when the individual acts on these suicidal feelings, death is the result.

Depression spills over into your career, family life and school time. While there are now medicinal treatments for this ailment, it remains resistant to treatment among many patients.

Their lives are a living hell thanks to the chaos and extremely dismal moods it engenders. As if this were not enough, the social stigma it creates only makes things worse.

It cannot be judged from appearances alone how this disease destroys lives. While a person may look alright on the outside, inside he is feeling so bad that his self esteem is virtually zero.

Energy is zapped, hopelessness and helplessness ensue and appetite suffers too. There is lack of sleep and extreme pain so that the person cannot even move or get out of bed.

Finally, concentration is nil and the resultant brain fog ensures that a career is out of the question. Some of the facts about living with depression have been shared by people on Twitter.

Someone said that it was like telling yourself again and again that you were worthy of remaining alive. Another person spoke of how your mind is filled up with so many negative thoughts that even having fun sounds like an exercise in frustration. Finally, an individual said that it was like nothingness. There were absolutely nothing left to be happy about in life.
