It is an open secret that Spotify is working on the launch in Japan and has been doing so for years. The company has though increased the job openings for its new Tokyo office beginning of the year. Now Japanese IT Media reports that Spotify launches in July in Japan. The information comes from officials at music labels. Spotify is according to them already running a closed beta of its Japanese version.
Japan is a difficult market as many consumers are still hooked on physical media. Apple Music is though already in Japan since last year. Other music streaming service in Japan include LINE, AWA and Google. Sony was offering its music streaming service in Japan as well, but shut it down world-wide last year in favor of a Spotify deal.
In Japan Spotify is last to the streaming music game. In most other markets Apple was last to the game. That has not stopped Apple from making big strides. Spotify is maybe coming into the Japanese market at the right time. Their freemium offer could be the key. There are though not details yet on how Spotify will offer its service in Japan.
Spotify leads the music streaming market with over 30 million paid subscribers. Apple Music has about 13 million paid subscriptions.
