Jake Gyllenhaal to portray the role of The Division in the film adaptation of the superhit game of the same name.

It is not his first video game adaptation role. Jake Gyllenhaal has already played the Prince of Persia, a commercially and critically unsuccessful film adaptation. We would think that would make him think twice about signing another role for a video game adaptation. Especially after Warcraft bombed on the box office this year.

However, we are talking about Ubisoft’s The Division. A game that earned $330 million dollars in sales in just five days upon its release in March. Developed and published by Ubisoft, with assistance from Red Storm Entertainment, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,

The game is about the third-person shooter is set in a dystopian New York City. The game follow an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, commonly referred to as simply “The Division”, who is tasked with helping to rebuild the Division’s operations in Manhattan, in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic. The player, investigates the nature of the outbreak and combating criminal activity in its wake.

Sources told Variety that Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star in The Division movie. Jake has also taken upon the production duties for the movie. It would be an opportunity for the actor to step into a major tent pole. This role will be different from several prestige projects such as “Nightcrawler,” “Southpaw” and the upcoming “Nocturnal Animals.”

This year, we will see Michael Fassbender in the film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed. The success of the movie will determine whether The Division will stand a chance at the box office. Usually, post-epidemic based movies have a decent record on the box office. If they have a good storyline that is loyal to the game’s plot and satisfies the fans of the games, Gyllenhaal may turn this around and put up a great movie.
