It is surprising that Face Palm was not an Unicode emoji yet.

The Unicode consortium approved 72 new emoji including Face Palm, Shrug, Lying Face and ROTFL (Rolling On The Floor Laughing) in the Unicode 9.0 release. These 72 new emojis will be rolled out into apps by Apple, Google, Facebook and others. Facebook is not satisfied with just added 72 new emojis. On June 1st the social media giant announced 1,500 new emojis for the Messenger app.

The new Facebook emojis are gender-agnostic options and multi-colored emojis will be available on many Android devices and web products for the first time. Messenger emojis include now for instance a female police officer, runner, pedestrian, surfer and swimmer for the very first time, and we'll keep rolling these out.

The Unicode Consortium releases new accepted sets of emojis every year in the month of June. The submission of new emojis is open to anyone. The new submission will be considered for Unicode 10 in 2017.
