Many are attracted to the Nepalese mountains and highlands. That is because they are the site of Himalayan Viagra.

It is cold in the Pupal Valley of Nepal. It is a long way from the capital city of the country. In spite of the snowy conditions, the locals can be seen out in the open looking here and there for something.

While their clothes are not sufficient to keep the cold from penetrating their bones, they seem to be active and have a bounce to their every step.

All of a sudden a gun went into action and upon the signal, these people started racing uphill as if they were seeing a heaven up there. It was actually the yearly harvest of the caterpillar fungus Yarsagumba.

Most of the people present at the spot had undertaken a two day journey. They came from Rukum, Dolpa, Baglung and Myagdi to reach Pupal. Some of them had their babies with them.

These people will stay in the location for a period of two months. They want to collect the rare and precious Yarsagumba. That is because it is a chief source of profit for so many.

Pupal Yarsa Festival 2016 president, Laxmi Prasad Pun, told Xinhua "People will stay in Pupal for nearly two months to collect the unique hybrid Yarasagumba, which has become a major means of income for thousands of people living in this mountainous region."

Over 100 volunteers and 40 security personnel are in the area as well. This has been done to preserve some semblance of peace, law and order. Last year alone some 18,000 people took part in the festival of sorts.

Yarsagumba is the mummified body of a Himalayan caterpillar. This is actually a potent drug of sorts. It can be in fact exchanged for its equivalent in gold.

Growing in areas that are 5000 meters above sea level, it looks to be gilded, is supersoft and tastes like cow’s milk. This miracle drug is found in Nepal, Bhutan, China and India. It is also located in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Yarsa as it is called in a shortened version is a powerful aphrodisiac. Also it can treat cancer symptoms. Mainly though it is meant to cure impotence. Termed “Himalayan Viagra” it sure can perk up one’s sex life.

Yet there does not exist much scientific information regarding this natural product. Several families and people are dependent on collecting and selling Yarsa. There are even some hotels built upon the seasonal concept in the region.

The sad thing though is the materialism attached with this wonder drug. Gone are the days when people would collect hundreds of specimens of Yarsa per day. Today only five to fifteen are the average number of specimens that are collected on a daily basis.
