In a surprising move, Sony confirms the existence of the PlayStation Neo

Rumors about a more powerful Sony PlayStation codenamed Neo surfaced a couple weeks ago. The PlayStation Neo is aimed at virtual reality gaming with the PlayStation VR headset. It was clear that Sony would not reveal the Neo at the E3 2016. Speculations of video game insiders pointed towards a Fall announcement in time for the PS VR launch. Now things have changed completely.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that a more powerful and more expensive Sony PlayStation is coming. The new console has indeed the codename Neo.

House said that the PlayStation Neo is targeted at hard-core gamers and consumers with 4K TVs. There would be no compatibility issues of new games. New titles will run on the standard PS4 as well, House stated. He also confirmed that the PlayStation Neo will not be unveiled at the E3 2016 next week.

"As with the current PS4 and its forthcoming VR headset, the new console will be “standalone profitable at the time that we launch it”, Andrew House said in the interview. This means that price of the new PS Neo will be around $500.

Mr. House did not specifically highlight the Neo as the better choice for the PS VR. He said that both Sony consoles support the PS VR. The Neo is though just made for that. The PC based VR systems are more powerful than the PS4 and Sony does not want to risk losing gamers to the PC world because of that.

At this time Sony has not revealed when the PlayStation Neo will be unveiled.

The timing of the Sony Neo is interesting. It could have been triggered by the recent rumors about Microsoft unveiling the Xbox Scorpio at the E3 2016.
