It has been found that lengthy career hours cause everything from cancer to heart attack in females.

Those women who burn the midnight oil as far as work responsibilities outside the home are concerned may be setting themselves up for deadly diseases. Their risk of contracting various cancers and heart attacks increased, the more stressful and hectic their careers were.

Many women who have entered the work force tend to put in 60 hour work weeks and this daily grind continues over a time span of a generation. The result is a host of illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, cardiac arrest and arthritis. Women seem to be especially vulnerable to these diseases.

When women in their quest to put in longer hours exceed the 40 hour work week and reach the 50 hour work week, they tend to become prone to all these maladies.

The experts found that those ladies who had to juggle responsibilities tended to feel high levels of stress and tension and the results were not good. The study was published online this week in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

While women in their years of young adulthood try to burn the candle at both ends, they must take into consideration the fact that somewhere down the line they will have to pay the price.

When females in their 20s, 30s and 40s tend to go for more work in a bid to have a better salary and more perks, they end up exhausted and completely wiped out. Burnout is the normal consequence of this workaholism.

"Women - especially women who have to juggle multiple roles - feel the effects of intensive work experiences and that can set the table for a variety of illnesses and disability," said Allard Dembe, professor of health services management and policy and lead author of the study.

"People don't think that much about how their early work experiences affect them down the road," he said. "Women in their 20s, 30s and 40s are setting themselves up for problems later in life."

Meanwhile, men fared better than their female cohorts in this field. They didn’t get so many ailments despite the long, tough and brutal work hours they put in their daily grind. Work is a burden for women due to the double responsibility of a job and domestic chores.

Tough jobs holds little attraction for women and they find work a distraction and dissatisfying. That is the reality of the situation. Effort need to be taken to ensure that women get enough time for some rest and relaxation.

The companies that employ women will also boost their productivity when their female workers are well-rested and healthy. Flexitime and hands-on coaching on the job are a boon.

The lengthy hours lead to all sorts of problems ranging from sleep disorders to dyspepsia and fatigue. Also job satisfaction will decrease and chances of accidents increase in their frequency.

The study tracked 12,000 American females over a period of time. The number of nasty diseases they got in the end due to their relentless workaholism shows that sometimes the best thing to do is nothing rather than engage in multitasking and becoming a nervous wreck in the process.
