The search giant unleashed its machine learning AI system to all queries made on Google now, with unknown effects.

Google is big in machine learning. WE have seen what they can do when a Google system called AlphaGo beat a Go Champion earlier this year. Google is also using machine learning in its core function - search. For the past year something called RankBrain has been running on the Google search engine.

Initially RankBrain only affected 15% of queries according to SearchEngineLand. Now according to a Googler, RankBrain is involved in all queries made on Google affecting ranking not in every query but in a lot of queries. The reveal comes as part of a lengthy piece about Google's machine learning efforts on BackChannel.

SearchEngineLand's Danny Sullivan has been told that people at Google don’t quite understand how RankBrain does what it does. Artificial Intelligence has officially taken over. Is SEO now dead? Are SEO experts now fighting with an artificial intelligence about rankings? Basically yes, but that has been always the case in a way. Google kept the ranking algorithm a black box since the beginning. Now that black box just got a lot smarter.

RankBrain is supposed to be designed to reward great content. Sullivan says: "So focus on that, which has always been the case with SEO, and you’re on the right track." Should we just not care about RankBrain?

Google's Gary Illyes said at the SMX Advanced that you cannot optimize or do SEO for RankBrain. He added there are no "scores" for RankBrain. He also said that RankBrain is a ranking factor, even though it has no score like page speed, Panda, Penguin and other ranking signals may have. Is your mind blown by now?

It appears Google's RankBrain defeats SEOs like AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol. Game over...
