The episode Winds of Winter set gave the audience a lot to ingest in an hour till the next season.

With tragic deaths, unforeseen truths and confrontations and declarations; the season six of the Game of Thornes came to an end. The tenth episode of the season The Winds of Winter, winter actually finally came.

King’s Landing however was not so cold. On the contrary, it was ablaze. With King Tommen having declared that Loras Tyrell and Cersei Lannister will stand trial in a court rather than the trial by combat, Cersei just refuses to comply. The episode started with the preparation of Cersei Lannister, King Tommen, Margery Tyrell and High Sparrow while Loras waits miserably in a cell.

The court convened and Loras was brought forth for judgement. Without hesitation, he admitted to all his crimes naming each. He declared that he was going to dedicate his life to the Gods and the Septons. He also took a solemn oath to never marry or bear children. The High Sparrow motioned his men and they took him from both sides before carving the symbol of the Gods in his forehead.

We now know that Margery was negotiating her brother’s trial’s outcome with the High Sparrow in return for her compliance. King Tommen gets up to go to the trial but he is stopped by Sir Gregor and we know something is wrong. Meanwhile Margery raises alarm about Cersei not being there. The High Sparrow disregards her worry and sends his men out to bring Cersei to court.

One of them spots one of the Qyburn’s children running down the street. He follows him down the sewers where he comes upon the reserves of Wild Fire. So we know that Cersei was right about her plans in the last episode. As anticipated, the whole court turns to ash as soon as the reserves of Wild Fire explode and there is nothing left of the court and its occupants including the whole Tyrell clan save Oleanna and the entire High Sparrow crew.

However, nothing was more tragic than King Tommen taking off his crown and then jumping off the building. May he rest in peace and Cersei didn’t seem to fret over his dead body. She was more worried about getting her revenge from all those who humiliated her and in the end, she took the Iron Thorne for herself. She looked at Jamie who had just made his way back from the House of Frey and there was no light in her eyes.

Jamie Lannister in his own stead showed us in one fell swoop what a rodent Frey was. We all remember Lord Frey as the one who betrayed the Starks and ended in the Red Wedding. However, Lord Frey did draw comparisons between himself and Jamie making him realize that they were almost the same. They had both killed kings, survived worst conditions and emerged victorious.

Jamie makes him realize that all of Frey’s victories are won by the Lannisters so what use was Frey to them. What use indeed as later in the episode, House of Frey ends in a horrible way. For all the people questioning Arya’s journey will be pleased to know that it enabled her to infiltrate the House of Frey disguised as a maid. She is seen earlier, eyeing Jamie so there might be a plan there.

However, she later serves Lord Frey and tells him the he is devouring his sons in his meal. He starts choking before Arya reveals herself and slits his throat. She tells him that she wants him to see the face of a Stark before he dies.

Speaking of the Starks, we see Jon Snow and Sansa telling each other about their strategies on the Battle of Bastards. He tells her that they need to trust each other from there on. That is just on the heels of him exiling Melisandre when Davos confronts her with Shireen’s burning. Davos demands her death but Jon asks her to leave and never return. If she would, she will be executed. Melisandre reminds him that she will help him with the Death Walker but he is not taking it.

Safe to say he took Davos side on this one because he would actually fight with him on the battlefield. Meanwhile, Lord Baelish proposes to Sansa in his own way once more with his desire to sit on the Iron Throne. She is too smart for him however, and refuses to be his pawn once more. Bran Stark on the other hand is left by his protector in the snow claiming her couldn’t go further.

He completes his vision of Ned Stark going to his sister Lyanna who had just given birth to a son. She makes young Ned promise to protect him. It is not stated clearly but through his eyes, we are able to make a link that Jon Snow was the baby that Lyanna gave birth to after Raegar had raped her. The revelation is made just before we see the convention of the houses of the North.

The houses are asking to wait out the storm before preparing for battle. When no one listens to him, the young and enigmatic Lyanna Mourmont takes center stage and calls on the Lord of each house and reminds them that they did not stand against Bolton in the battle with the Starks. She however remembers her family’s oath and she declares Jon as her King. The Lords all admit their faults and declare Jon their King and pledge their troops and allegiance for war.

In Mereen, another war brews as Daenerys is informed by Daario that the troops are ready. She tells him that he has to stay behind and maintain peace in Mereen. She explains to him that he will be considered her lover and make others question her as Queen. He argues at first but then gives in gallantly.

She tells Tyrion that she has told off Daario. He then tries to console her but fails. He instead tells her that he believes in her. She tells him that she needs his counsel. She bestows a pin on him and calls him the Hand of Counsel of the Queen. Tyrion takes to the knee in front of her. We later see the ships of her fleet and the dragons heading for the King’s Landing.

So we now know that Bran know Jon’s reality, Oleanna is looking for revenge against Cersei and Varys is offering her help. Sansa is reluctantly at Jon’s side as they prepare for battle against the Dead Walkers while Daenerys is headed to attack King’s Landing. It was not a banging ending but it has left the Game of Thrones fans definitely looking forward to what is to come ahead in Season 7 of the show.
