World's Smallest 3D Printed Lens Revealed
  • Smallest Lens to be Used in Camera Twice the Width of a Human Hair

The world’s smallest lens is to be used soon in a camera that happens to be twice the width of a human hair.

The smallest lens in the world has been created in order to take images from within a surveillance camera. As for the surveillance camera, it is just twice the width of a human hair.

3D printing was employed to create this marvel of human existence. Eventually cameras could be made that are as small as a grain of salt. That will be the day.

This step will be a virtual game changer for such fields of endeavor as surgery, surveillance, AI and drone technology. A triplet lens was manufactured in Germany that consisted of three extra small lens fitted in a pinhead gadget. The device can take images that are crystal clear, according to DailyMail.

The fact that it is so small and delicate that it can be fitted into a pin speaks volumes about the nanotechnology involved in this new gizmo of sorts. These lenses can be fitted on image sensors as well as at the working end of an endoscope.

Short sparks of laser light were employed to harden the material which formed the base of these lens. It was tough work but when it was finally accomplished it was a case of love’s labour bearing fruit.

The lens were 3D printed on top of the material base. This lens can even fit snugly inside a hypodermic syringe needle. There are normally limitations of manufacturing that get in the way of the creation of such small lens. Yet here we have a case of the scientists doubling up their efforts and finally succeeding at making the impossible possible.

There were several complex issues that had to be ironed out before a proper 3D printing and usage of such a mini-lens was even viable. The aberrations which appeared on the way towards a perfect series of lens are not one but many.

Yet the limitations were conquered in the final analysis. This here is nanotechnology at its best and finest peak of performance. It is a new concept in optics. Besides medical uses, the lens could serve as a spycraft device.

Drone technology and surveillance are two other fields where this lens could have a thorough application. Also the diminutive lens may play a vital role in future fiber imaging.

The reaserch paper about this world’s smallest lens got published in Nature Photonics.
