A recent FDA warning has it that people should not consume cookie dough in its raw state. It is definitely not good for you.

There are some individuals who cannot resist the temptation to scrape the cookie dough bowl after it has had its contents used for baking. It is just a habit of curiosity for mankind like some people consuming the toothpaste they use to brush their teeth with.

Yet the FDA has issued a warning to the effect that all such consumption of raw cookie dough is bad for your health.

Raw cookie dough is a health hazard amidst an outbreak of E.coli bacteria that has led to over 38 people getting sick. The malady has struck over 20 states of the USA. It began in December of last year.

The CDC investigated further regarding the matter and found that half of the illnesses were due to the presence of raw flour in the house that had been consumed as an afterthought.

Later tests showed that the outbreak of sicknesses was due to packets of General Mills flour produced in Missouri. The company has had the grace and decency to recall over 10 million pounds of the infected flour after this outbreak.

Salmonella poisoning from raw dough is not anything new. Yet very few people know that by consuming even a tiny portion of this raw flour, you set yourself up to be infected by these E.coli bacteria.

The flour is derived from a grain that is grown in the open fields. It has not been treated with any means whatsoever to remove the bacteria that exist within it.

However, the bacteria are normally decimated completely during the cooking process. By boiling, baking, frying, roasting and microwaving the dough, we remove all signs of any intrinsic bacteria it might harbor, according to NYTimes.

If some people are still adamant that they will use raw flour (for example in cookie dough ice cream) then the best option is to utilize the commercial dough found in supermarkets.

Among the ingredients of this dough, the eggs ought to have been pasteurized and the flour should have received the standard treatment. The FDA released a few guidelines regarding raw cookie dough.

The first one is obviously not to eat it. That is the safest alternative. Also to follow the instructions on the packet is a must. To wash your hands after contact with the dough is also mandatory.

Keeping these raw products away from other foodstuff is a necessity too. Finally, the dough ought to be placed in a refrigerator to ensure that it does not undergo any spoilage.
