A 1000 year old skull that was discovered by Chinese archaeologists may have been that of the Buddha.

Pieces of bones from a skull were found within a 1000 year old Chinese chest. Speculation is rife that it may have belonged to none other than the Buddha.

A group of archaeologists made the discovery at a Buddhist Temple in Nanjing, China a half a dozen years ago. The moment they opened a stone chest, they came upon a stupa which was probably used for meditation purposes.

The shrine is 4 feet by 1.5 feet in its dimensions, according to LiveScience. It is composed of sandalwood, gold, silver and has precious stones imbedded in it. It contained several bones.

The various writings on the chest show that it belonged to a period that went back a millennium in time. There was also a diminutive casket. This held immense significance for the monks of the temple.

The narrative on top of the casket spoke of how the Buddha’s skull bone was within the box-like structure. When the Buddha died, his body was cremated. Yet several bones which were from his body were conveyed to China. The fragments of other Buddhist saints were in the casket as well.

After the repositories of the bones was destroyed several times through the annals of history, the temple was finally rebuilt from the ground up. The shrine was placed within the crypt of the temple.

On the box are engraved several lotus flowers, pheonixes and guardians. The skull bone that belongs to the Buddha may be a parietal bone. Among the gemstones imbedded on the box are crystal, glass, agate and lapis lazuli.

Although the inscriptions say that the skull bone belongs to the Buddha, this has not been confirmed with surety. It is a hypothesis that is yet to be proven.

The bones are being treated with the greatest respect since they probably belong to the founder and saints of one of the major eastern religions, that is Buddhism.

The temple in which these bones were found was rebuilt at one point in history by Emperor Zhenzong. Images of the Buddha along with events from the Buddha’s life are depicted on the casket which contains the bones.

Though this discovery has been given scant coverage in the West, it is being treated with the utmost respect and honor that it deserves by the media of China. Buddhism is after all one of the three great religions of China. Taoism and Confucianism are the other two.
