Scientists have given the verdict on pasta. They say that it may not be a fattening food at all.

Ever since the low carb Atkins revival, pasta has gained an evil reputation as a food that will make you fat. This has led to many people subtracting this comfort food from their diets in a haste to get thinner.

They began taking an extreme approach by becoming vicious carnivores and wiping the slate clean as far as carbohydrates are concerned. Yet a novel study in Italy proves that pasta can be a part of a healthy diet.

In fact, there is no such thing as a Mediterranean Diet without the component of pasta drizzled with copious amounts of olive oil and tomato sauce. Not only does pasta consumption lead to satiation but it also reduces overall fat and abdominal fat.

Over 23,000 people were gauged by the researchers. The participants and their eating patterns were noted down with fidelity. It was found that pasta intake was not connected in any way with weight gain. Rather the opposite effect was noticed. People lost weight on a diet of pasta with several different toppings.

Pasta consumption was linked with a normal BMI, waist girth and waist-to-hip ratio. The Mediterranean Diet is one of the healthiest eating regimens in the world. It consists of pasta, tomatoes, citrus fruit, olives, olive oil, fish, poultry, seafood, leafy green vegetables and low fat dairy products.

Such a diet is ideal for weight loss especially when eaten in the context of the Great Outdoors. The fact that it has pasta in it ought not to detract from its overall salubrious effect on human health and functioning. While pasta contains carbohydrates, it can be made a part of a well-balanced diet that aids fat loss and builds lean muscle mass.

Completely excluding pasta from one’s diet is a big mistake. This action does not necessarily have any healthy outcomes. By eliminating carbohydrates and filling up on proteins and fats, we place a huge burden on our kidneys. Besides, pasta is a very vital component of the Mediterranean Diet.

Without it, the diet is incomplete at best and not as effective in its fat-burning benefits. So, those who want to be fit and smart ought to look forward to their daily bowl of pasta since it will not make them overweight or flabby in any way.

The study was published in the journal Nutrition and Diabetes.
