Pokemon Go has Full Google Account Access By Mistake

Niantic Labs acknowledges that the full access Pokemon Go has to your Google account is a bug.

Niantic Labs and Nitendo do not want to read your emails. When you signed up for Pokemon Go via your Gmail account than Pokemon Go got full access to your account. This was not intended. It is a bug said Niantic Labs in statement on Monday. As of writing this story, my Pokemon Go app status in my Google Account still states "Full account access."

Niantic Labs said that they will not access your personal information. Read the full statement on the issue below. If you feel uncomfortable you can remove the access Pokemon Go has to your Google Account and create a Pokémon Trainer Club account and use that to sign into Pokemon Go.

Especially Android users who have installed Pokemon Go via the floating APK files should consider removing access. There is a risk that the APK contains malware, which potentially could access your Google Account.

The Pokemon Go makers also issued a warning to not install Pokemon Go from a copy outside of official app stores. The warning says: "Trainers, only install Pokémon GO via the Play Store or App Store. Downloads from other sources may contain malware or viruses." We have reported about this before. Especially Pokemon Go fans using Android in countries the augmented reality app has not launched yet are tempted to install Pokemon Go APK file.

These are not the technical biggest issues Niantic Labs is facing. The Pokemon Go game gone viral with gamers in the United States overloading the server infrastructure. The rollout to Europe and Asia had to be put on hold. It will be few days until the rollout of Pokemon Go continues according to sources.

Pokemon Go causes other trouble as well. We reported about a gang who used Pokemon Go to rob trainers at gun point. As the game proofs to be extremely engaging, gamers forget their surrounding which leads to dangerous situations while catching Pokemon.

A man has turned to Twitter to raise awareness that his home is a Pokemon Go gym. Niantic Labs is turning physical places into gyms as they like. The company usually takes sights as Gyms. In the case of Boon Sheridan, nobody told Niantic Labs that the former church is a home now.

As Pokemon Go has not rolled to the whole world yet, we have not seen the worst of it yet. Nintendo and Niantic Labs will face many issues to resolve to make Pokemon Go a safe game. The company focuses on the positive side effects of the engaging game. Trainers get a lot of exercise walking around. This is only true if they do not use their cars, as most adult Americans are doing.

Niantic Labs statement on Google Account Access:

We recently discovered that the Pokémon GO account creation process on iOS erroneously requests full access permission for the user’s Google account. However, Pokémon GO only accesses basic Google profile information (specifically, your User ID and email address) and no other Google account information is or has been accessed or collected. Once we became aware of this error, we began working on a client-side fix to request permission for only basic Google profile information, in line with the data that we actually access. Google has verified that no other information has been received or accessed by Pokémon GO or Niantic. Google will soon reduce Pokémon GO’s permission to only the basic profile data that Pokémon GO needs, and users do not need to take any actions themselves.
