Scientists have found two more carcinogens in e-cigarette smoke. It seems they are not as safe as they were said to be.

The smoke coming from e-cigarettes is now said to contain two carcinogens. A novel study, which was published in Environmental Science & Technology, found this to be the case. Also various ratios of deleterious chemicals were found in e-cigarettes.

Two different e-cigarettes were employed in the experiment that got carried out. Vaping them at different battery settings took place. Then the ensuing vapors were analyzed. There were a total of 31 deleterious compounds. Two of them happened to be carcinogens.

These two had never been found in e-cigarette smoke in erstwhile times. The amounts of these chemicals varied in accordance with the rate at which the e-cigarettes were vaporized by the heating coil.

The greater the temperature in the coil, the more the number of chemicals released by the e-cigarette. Those e-cigarettes which had one heating coil instead of two also gave off more of a plethora of chemicals.

This was because two coils somehow ended up distributing the heat. Earlier studies had shown that e-cigarettes released toxic compounds. About half a dozen years ago, the FDA issued a warning to the effect that e-cigarettes contained diethylene glycol.

This was a component of antifreeze. A year back, a study showed that the aerosols of e-cigarettes contained formaldehyde. This is a carcinogen.

A few of these chemicals are also found in ordinary cigarette smoke. An e-cigarette with a single heating coil worked on 3.8 volts and released 0.46 micrograms of acrolein.

This is a very bad eye and lung irritant. When the heat got steadier, the amount of acrolein increased to 8.7 micrograms which is a humongous amount. This is still a far cry from the ordinary cigarette which releases 400 to 650 micrograms of the nasty stuff.

Those who advice that people should switch to e-cigarettes from real cigarettes say that the former release less harmful chemicals. So it is supposed in an uncritical manner that they are better for health than ordinary cigarettes.

While this strategy may work for full-time smokers that have a hard time quitting the nicotine habit, for the ordinary dude, e-cigarettes are just not healthy.

So although regular cigarettes are very unhealthy, their cousins, the e-cigerattes are just unhealthy. Ingesting all those carcinogens is not a good idea. People are playing with their health when they smoke e-cigarettes.
