Patent for Digital Crown found on Apple Watch approved for iPhones and iPads.

The Digital Crown which graces the Apple Watch has been a phenomenal success for the Apple due to its uniqueness and the functions it performs for the watch.

Following on the success of this Digital Crown it appears as if Apple has published a patent application to include as a new feature for all upcoming iPads and iPhones.

It is not entirely necessary that all patents acquired by a company as large as Apple pertaining to new features or specific technology are actually utilized. But the inclusion of this Digital Crown offers advantages that makes us want this patent to be put to full use.

The popularity and success of the Digital Crown when it comes the Apple Watch is quite obvious because firstly it makes using the watch a lot more easier and secondly it is reminiscent of the crown of traditional watches.

The Crown could be used to control volume or as a lock button for the phones touch screen. On the other hand it could also be used to snap a picture or enlarge text at will. We can think of a whole bunch of uses for the Digital Crown.

The thing of interest with this patent application is the fact that it suggests future iPhones and iPads to come with a Bezel. Patently Apple noted that “In some examples, the device may not have a border region and may instead have a surface composed only of touch screen.”

It is highly unlikely that this idea comes into fruition but there is no harm in putting our imaginations to good use.
