Smart devices are everywhere that are being used by people at leisure, and businesses have caught on to this emerging trend even to the point where they can simplify whole departments within their companies. This is all possible with software where it may have taken dozens of personnel 20 years ago, but now takes one or two people. This can be seen with systems like online time sheet software.

Currently, there is a worry that office buildings will become obsolete in the near distant future with Wi-Fi allowing employees within a company to work virtually anywhere. However, just because technology is transforming how businesses do their work doesn’t mean office space will disappear. When people meet together at offices, there is something offered that cannot simply be solved with a computer no matter how advanced the technology. Office buildings have to adapt this technology into their infrastructure in order to compete in this growing digital trend.

Today, we will look how office buildings will be changing to cater to the growing technological innovations. Let’s get started!

Technology must be incorporated into current office designs to address the change in space in order to prevent becoming obsolete. Businesses today are looking for floor plan efficiencies, less space, and more productivity.

Looking at technologies that buildings need integrated into their blueprints going forward includes:

  • Smart Glass: This special glass of the future changes in appearance from opaque to transparent and is activated by a specific temperature, sunlight, or specific voltage. With smart glass, you can save on heating, cooling and lighting for a building.

  • Fuel Cell Systems: This system uses fuel and oxygen to produce electricity. This can be set up to buildings system that might run off existing utilities like natural gas. This type of technology makes the building more electricity efficient and is virtually emission and pollution free.

  • Solar Roof Tops: Why waste what the sun hath provided onto of your office building. Sun can be collectively collected and then deposited into an onsite battery storage facility helping to reduce your carbon footprint.

  • Building Automation Systems (BAS): This type of technology is a centralized system that interlinks networks, hardware and software into one package. BAS monitors the operation performance of the building as well as the comfort and safety of the occupants. The task of the technology is to reduce maintenance costs while increasing energy conservation of the building.

  • Biometrics: With this type of technology, it acts as a type of security as it can let certain personnel into specific areas or zones within a building. Biometrics are not just limited to security as it can be used to access office equipment throughout the office. Biometrics can be through the use of card readers, iris scanners, fingerprints, and even microchip implants.

  • LED Lighting: This last technology might not seem that impressive, but you can drop the electricity usage of your building dramatically by using LED bulbs. The use of LED bulbs makes the offices throughout the building energy efficient.

The Future of Office Buildings

Office buildings are here to stay as they have been a core of business for decades. Although technology keeps advancing, office buildings will have to adapt to keep up with the current trend or become obsolete. With new energy technologies coming out, we might see office buildings monetize their energy solutions, not only providing virtually free electricity for their tenants but also sending their spare electricity to power back to the grid to help pay down their property taxes.
