It is being said that a sedentary lifestyle is the reason of existence for diseases like diabetes.

Lazy lifestyles are leading to so many people facing symptoms of diseases such as diabetes. There has been a surge in cases of blindness and other nasty complications due to diabetes. Many teens in Ireland not to mention those in their early 20s do not lead healthy lives.

They spend the whole day sitting on the sofa and eat a diet filled with simple sugars, saturated fats and too much alcohol. Irish optimetrists say these populations are most at risk of going blind from metabolic disorders such as diabetes.

Some of them are even stuck with the poor eyesight of those who are in their 60s. This is indeed tragic and a clear sign of how our current generation has a poor diet and an unhealthy lifestyle.

90% of those who contract diabetes tend to have a very messy diet and get no exertion in the form of regular movement. The disease could be cured or managed via changes in diet and exercise patterns.

Yet more and more of the youth generation tend to lead lives of passive consumption, mindless eating and are couch potatoes to boot.

The results of all this carelessness is that the majority of these young people end up having poor eyesight or even go blind at some stage of their lives. The figures speak for themselves.

225,840 people have diabetes in Ireland, according to IrishExaminer. 854,165 adults also develop type 2 diabetes after they are over the hill. This number of diabetes sufferers is spiralling upwards leading to the risks of blindness going through the roof.

Research in other parts of the world will develop novel drugs that combat diabetic blindness. Yet such drugs are still half a decade away. Diabetic retinopathy is intimately linked to the couch potato syndrome and a high-fat and high-sugar diet.

Due to chronically elevated glucose levels in the blood, the blood vessels in the eye are damaged. Those who are obese and do not undergo any exertion during the week are most prone to this complication.

The issue has reached alarming rates and is being looked into in Ireland. No nation wants to lose its youth to degenerative diseases. The future generation is the one which will be the flagbearer for the shape society takes in the times to come.

If it exists solely on the western diet, which is crammed full of processed carbohydrates, and refuses to lift a finger then the scenario does not look good at all.
