Finland's problem with alcoholism is at an all time high.

It doesn’t matter what country you live in, alcoholism remains a dirty little secret that most are ashamed to admit they are affected by. Regardless of whether someone is the drinker or someone’s life is directly affected by it, people would rather talk about anything else than their own or someone else’s drinking problem.

Trouble in Finland

In Finland, this issue seems especially hard-hitting. A medical expert says that a million and a half Fins, mostly women, are impacted from alcoholism, and recent statistics show a 30 percent increase in medical care as a result of alcoholism. Not only does alcohol take a toll on the body, it also puts a serious strain on the health care industry.

In spite of the fact that alcohol consumption has decreased over the last 10 years in Nordic countries, Finland still remains the country with the highest intake of alcohol. At the same time, it has become more and more difficult to receive treatment for alcoholism because big business would rather sweep the problem under the rug than admit there’s a problem. Regardless, it is an issue that impacts everyone, whether or not they, or you, drink, because of the cost of caring for someone who has been injured in an alcohol-related accident.

Finding the Strength to Sober Up

In Finland, the numbers are even more disturbing with almost a million women – in a county whose population is just over 5 million – being affected by alcoholism, directly and indirectly. One of the biggest fears about stopping drinking for many alcoholics is the fear of what detox will do to them, especially after years of drinking. While there are rehab centers available in Finland, the most important part of getting sober is the belief that you can.

Alcoholics Anonymous, one of the best support systems for those who want to stop drinking, has meetings available in Finland to offer help for those who want to stop. With meetings available around the world, and in almost every city, there is hope and help for many.

Regardless of where you live, either in Iceland, the United States or another European country, there are plenty of programs available to you around the clock that will help you in your journey for a better life, both physically and emotionally. Even when you feel there are no other options there are support groups that can offer meetings, and hope, closer than you think.
