Technology has seen progress and continuing refinement but in some cases it has enabled a resurgence of some of the greatest games we played in the past. Some of the games have thrived thanks to the availability of online and mobile versions, while game developers for console and PC platforms are reviving others.

If you were to compile a list of some of the greatest games that have enjoyed a new lease of life it would be bound to include some of the following:

  1. Bingo: Once the staple of community halls and older ladies, Bingo has enjoyed resurgence with younger generations attracted to the fast-game play and ease of access of the online and mobile versions. The laid-back gameplay makes Bingo an attractive option for those looking to unwind after a stressful day, or in a break from work or study. The attractions of Bingo are numerous. It stimulates the brain and helps boost accuracy and speed, so much so that it was used in German schools in the 1800s as a teaching aid. No two games of Bingo are ever the same and a standard bingo card offers a staggering 1,474,200 different winning combinations. The popularity of Internet Bingo is such that 85 percent of Bingo players are now playing online.

  2. Doom: This classic games dates back to 1993 and was one of the original first-person shooters. Its popularity is such that Doom has even been included in the World Video Game Hall of Fame. A new installment of the game promised modern gameplay and intends bringing a new generation of players to the classic. It was released for PlayStation, Xbox, and Microsoft Windows in May 2016 and has proven popular with gamers.

  3. Tetris: The classic puzzle game, in which you match tiles as they descend from the top of the screen, was developed in the Soviet Union before being rolled out to the rest of the world in the 1980s. It has come to be associated with that era and was one of the classic Arcade games, however, Tetris has always moved with the times and there are versions for almost every console and computer operating system. Online and smartphone versions have appeared also. Research has found that playing Tetris can lead to greater efficiency in game play, but if you have ever played it you will have enjoyed simply because it is very addictive, in the best possible way.

  4. Pokémon: What began as a pair of video games for the original Nintendo Game Boy has evolved into a multi-faceted franchise, with the latest version, Pokémon Go, attracting almost feverish attention. Pokémon centers on a series of characters, where players catch and train to battle each other. The success of Pokémon Go reflects the gaming habits of a newer generation and the development of newer technologies. Pokémon Go is a downloadable app that utilizes the GPS and clock functions of a smartphone to detect your location and then makes Pokémon characters "appear,” but in order to catch them you have to travel to a physical location near you. This element of the game uses the newly developed concept known as “augmented reality” and reflects the growing demand for interactive gaming as mobile technology becomes an increasingly integrated part of all our lives, making the transition from what is virtual to what is real-world almost seamless. Pokémon Go has taken off to such an extent that the number of average daily users is surpassing popular social media sites, such as Twitter and Facebook.

Why there are so many bingo games is, in its own way, attributable to the evolution of online gaming in general. Sites such as Wink Bingo offer different versions of Bingo to suit different types of player. Some players prefer traditional versions of the game, such as 75-ball and 90-ball Bingo but other players, especially those who have grown up playing video games, want versions of Bingo that more reflect what they are used to, whether that be faster gameplay or something like progressive jackpots, where the more people that play the bigger the prizes become. The resurgence of such games as Bingo online is helped also by the adoption of online chat and interaction, with many sites offering chat room options for those players who like to interact with other players and maybe even make new friends. Online Bingo sites also offer free games and beginner versions for those new to the world of Bingo.

The more things change they more they stay the same, as the old saying goes, and the resurgence of games that were popular in the past, thanks to the availability of online and mobile versions, demonstrates that for some of us at least not everything old needs to be thrown away.
