Black Hole Evaporation Creates Hawking Radiation

The discovery has partially shook the science of physics to the core. It is that black holes tend to evaporate and give off Hawking radiation in the process.

The standard thinking about black holes shows us that they are gravitational hubs and that not even light escapes their grasp. Everything gets virtually sucked into the core of the black hole.

In the 70s, Stephen Hawking made the hypothesis that some black holes tend to radiate quantum particles which may lead to their evaporation. Finally, today a scientist from Israel has made the extraordinary discovery that black holes do give out Hawking radiation.

This radiation takes place close to the event horizon of the black hole. What happens is this: Virtual particle pairs are consistently being made at the horizon of the black hole.

Under normal circumstances, they are created as particle-antiparticle pairs which destroy each other in a sort of quantum physics duel of opposites. Near the horizon though something different happens once in awhile.

One of the particles is sucked into the black hole and as for the other one, it manages to escape. This second particle escapes in the form of Hawking radiation.

Virtually all the black holes which have been observed vicariously until now have been sucking in huge quantities of sweltering gases. Their collective radiation is much greater than that of a single black hole.

In order to break this barrier to proper research, a black hole analogue was created. It appeared to emit Hawking radiation. This was due to quantum ups and downs in its experimental status.

The Bose-Einstein equation still holds true for this experiment, according to Nature. This analogue setup employed sound waves rather than light waves. It also employed phonons rather than photons.

While the scientific community has expressed praise at the experimental results, they are also advising the Israeli scientist to proceed with caution.

Although the experiment is amazing not to mention amusing, it does not prove beyond a shadow of doubt that Hawking radiation actually exists. For one think this experiment does not throw any light on the information paradox.

This paradox was also formulated by Stephen Hawking. It says that all the information regarding what gets sucked into a black hole will be destroyed by the internal forces of the black hole upon its disappearance. This is quite a contrast to the accepted version of things according to which things remain constant within a black hole.

The findings of this study got published in the journal Nature Physics.
