It has been reported that a dead end career may actually harm your health when you are over the hill.

For those who have a satisfying job in their 20s and 30s, they will most likely enjoy glowing physical and mental health in their 40s as well. The study showed this to be even more important for the psyche than the body.

As for the poor lot that is dissatisfied with their jobs, they ended up not only down in the dumps but were worry warts and insomniacs to boot. Even the general direction your job took during the formative years may have a lot to do with the sort of health you enjoy during your middle age years.

Thus even if you started out in a menial position in terms of your career, if you advanced to an enviable post with the passage of time, you were likely to have peak health by the time you were 40.

The study was carefully conducted and the results were discussed at a yearly meeting of the American Sociological Association.

Thus the importance of the early status of your vocation on later outcomes in terms of health and vitality were not to be ignored. Job satisfaction is an ongoing process and it is about the journey one takes and not about the destination.

6432 Americans were examined in the study. They were between the age groups of 14 and 22 when the survey began way back in 1979. Later on job satisfaction trends from ages 25 to 39 were studied as well.

After the participants had turned 40 years old during a long lapse of time, their physical and psychological health status was noted down. The participants filled a questionnaire related to their attitude towards their jobs.

They were divided into four categories. These included high job satisfaction people and low job satisfaction people. Then there were those who started out low but progressed higher.

Finally, there were those who started out high but later on ended up in a dead end job. At least 45% had low job satisfaction. 23% faced a lowering of standards as their careers progressed.

Only 15% were really content at their jobs and 17% were on an uphill journey and making loads of progress. The real factor that had chief importance in this career game was mental health.

Those who were not satisfied with their jobs showed the worst symptoms of mental health. Depression, anxiety and sleep issues were way up there at the top of the list.

Also emotional problems were aplenty in these unfortunate people. Among the physical problems that occurred may be included: lumbago, influenza, diabetes and cancer. The toll a stagnant job takes on one’s mental health is therefore particularly devastating.
