The concerned authorities want to put a ban on people swimming with dolphins. The reason being given is that it causes a whole lot of stress to the dolphins.

The feds want to ban any swimming schemes where the public gets to interact with dolphins in Hawaii. While this could doom the most lucrative tourist activity of Hawaii, the dolphins have rights too and it seems they were under a lot of stress due to this very human strategy.

A whole industry had burgeoned around this focal activity. Yet it had come too close to the stomping grounds of animal rights activists. The spinner dolphins which were the ones the people normally swam about with in Hawaii had a hectic schedule and they badly needed a break from this routine.

Both tourists and locals tended to enjoy swimming with the dolphins. It was a pleasurable activity. Many firms were responsible for the tours which the people looked forward to with eager anticipation.

Were the latest ban to be fully implemented, it could put the business into jeopardy. The area the rule covers is extant over two nautical miles. This virtually covers 98% of the spinner dolphins of Hawaii, according to NYTimes.

It is being said that a middle ground has to be found between the law and reality. While no one wants the dolphins to go berserk and lose their minds due to demands, no one wants the entire industry shut down either.

Maybe a way could be found where a select number of tourists are taken to the dolphins’ area and allowed to swim with them under the protection of a license.

Many have pointed out the therapeutic effects of swimming with dolphins on many people. All sorts of people from all walks of life have found fun, pleasure and stress relief via this scheme of pure enjoyment.

To take away the rights of people is just as bad as taking away the rights of animals. A delicate balance must be found between extremes.

As for animal rights activists, they have pointed out that the dolphins are burning more calories by merely anticipating the arrival of tourists who will swim with them.

Such chronic stress levels are not a good sign. The dolphins need some rest and relaxation themselves. To ensure this and the fact that they don’t suffer from burnout, the authorities are getting tough on the tourism trade.
