Niantic announced the Pokemon Buddy feature on September 2nd, after references of the new features have been spotted in the Pokemon Go app source code. The new Pokemon Go app update with the Buddy feature could be released as early as today. Android users might be getting the update earlier again. The iOS update came a day later last time to the iPhone users.

Update 9/8: Niantic has announced that the Pokemon Go Plus ships on September 16. We believe now that Niantic is releasing a big update of the Pokemon Go app that not only will include Pokemon Buddy, but also the nearby tracker and Pokemon Go Plus support next week on Tuesday, September 13.
There is a chance that the Labor Day holiday pushes the release of the update back to Wednesday. Update: Labor Day has indeed pushed the release of the new update from Tuesday to Wednesday. Niantic is now expected to release the new Pokemon Go app update on Wednesday, September 7. The update is probably showing up first in the Google Play Store.
The Buddy Pokemon feature announcement has been welcomed very positively by the trainer community. You will be able to pick your favorite Pokémon from your collection to become your buddy, opening up unique in-game rewards and experiences. Buddy Pokémon will appear alongside your Trainer avatar on your profile screen, adding helpful bonuses such as awarding Candy for walking together. You’ll also have the ability to change your Buddy Pokémon at any time.
While it would be more exciting to see Snorlax walking besides you in augmented reality, the new feature has still a lot of appeal.
Pokemon Buddy will be the biggest update after the appraisal feature. While the Buddy Pokemon feature is neat, what is more anticipated is the in-app Pokemon Go tracker. Niantic has not made any comments on when to expect the new nearby tracker.
The Pokemon Go Plus wearable requires a tracker functionality to work. The device is set to be released on September 30. The first stores have started to take Pokemon Go Plus pre-orders and on the weekend the Pokemon Go accessory appeared on Amazon in Germany.
