Pokemon Go Plus Wearable Pokemon Tracker Ships September 16

Niantic surprises with early release date of Pokemon Go Plus

On Wednesday Niantic CEO John Hanke took the stage at the Apple media event to announce Pokemon Go for the Apple Watch. The Pokemon Go Apple Watch app makes the Pokemon Go Plus look like gadget from the stone age. Pokemon Go on the Apple Watch has wide range of features that go beyond notification about Pokemon and PokeStops.

Nintendo will sell a lot less Pokemon Go Plus devices now. Pokemon Go is going to push Apple Watch sales quite a bit this Holiday season. The Apple Watch Series 1 starts at $269 and we expect a lot of Apple Watch Black Friday deals as Apple has now a wide-range of watches with the Series 1 and the Series 2 with GPS.

Niantic issued an update announcing that the Pokemon Go Plus already ships on September 16. Before a September 30 release date was communicated.

Pokemon Go Plus is a companion device that connects to your phone over Bluetooth Smart (the Bluetooth low energy connection designed for health and fitness applications), allowing you to keep your phone in your pocket and go about your day-to-day activities while still being able to collect valuable resources and capture even the most elusive Pokémon.

As you pass by a PokeStop, Pokemon Go Plus will vibrate and light up and alert you to the location. You’ll even be able to collect new items just by clicking the Pokemon Go Plus. If there’s nearby Pokémon hiding in your area you’ll be alerted with lights and vibrations; catch the Pokémon with a button on Pokemon Go Plus and then continue on your way. Later, you can check your Journal to see which Pokémon you’ve just caught. This last feature is a bit odd, as you are not required to throw a PokeBall. You just push a button.

We checked Amazon, GameStop and ToysRUs are not listing the Pokemon Go Plus yet for pre-order. Retailers will likely launch pre-order for Pokemon Go Plus this week.

Niantic is announcing a lot these days. Last week Niantic announced Pokemon Buddy. It will be the biggest update after the appraisal feature. While the Buddy Pokemon feature is neat, what is more anticipated is the in-app Pokemon Go tracker. Niantic has not made any comments on when to expect the new nearby tracker.

As the Pokemon Go Plus wearable requires a tracker functionality to work, the nearby feature needs to be released latest September 16 as well. The first stores have started to take Pokemon Go Plus pre-orders and on the weekend the Pokemon Go accessory appeared on Amazon in Germany, but with a September 30 release date.

While the in-app Pokemon Go tracker is still in the works you can use these Pokemon Go maps and tracker apps that do not require a login. See also our complete Pokemon Go Tracker Round-up.

In the last eight weeks, Pokemon Go surpassed 500 million downloads around the world and players have collectively walked 4.6 billion kilometers, which is the distance from Earth to Pluto. Niantic's CEO Hanke announced these stunning milestones at the Apple Event on September 7.
