That was the thing on her mind probably when she invited one of the victims of the recent Orlando’s Pulse shooting victim Tony Marrero on the show to talk about his ordeal and his recovery.
Tony was at the LGBT night club with Luis Vielma, a co-worker at Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Tony said that he was shot five time by the gunman Omar Mateen, four times in the back and once on the arm. He had survived, he reckoned because he had protected his head by remaining under a couch.
Injured and devastated, Tony was in the hospital while friends, family and the entire Potter world prayed and wished for his recovery. He found his inspiration to get better in Katy Perry’s 2016 Rio Summer Olympics’ official theme ‘Rise’.
The lyrics of the song that go something like, I won't just survive / Oh, you will see me thrive / Can't write my story / I'm beyond the archetype / I won't just conform / No matter how you shake my core / 'Cause my roots, they run deep.
Tony said that he had listened to the song on repeat in the hospital and it had inspired him to get better. He said that he had listened to the song so much that his boyfriend, who was in the crowd at the time, had grown tired of it. Ellen then told him that they had the inspiring artist in the building and she wanted to meet him.
That’s when Katy walked out on stage and it looked like a competition of who could keep their tears from falling as they met each other.
Katy said that his story inspired her to keep making songs and reaching out to people. He said that he appreciated her making songs that helped him and so many others to be better and rise.
