A gene shot to the brain is something that could actually put a stop to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s Disease could be halted thanks to a gene injection to the memory centers of the brain. The gene could thus clean out the glutinous plaques in the brain. Once the damage control has been finalized, Alzheimer’s Disease is something the patients can literally say good riddance to.

This cutting edge research began about half a decade ago. Scientists found a protein called PGC1-alpha. It happens to play a very important role in clearing up the build-up of amyloid beta plaques. However, the patients with Alzheimer’s do not produce enough of this protein.

Yet now we have a targeted gene that can help this protein produce the plaque-clearing agent. Those rodents that were treated in the lab with this sort of gene therapy recovered their brain memory centers.

The plaques were wiped out and they did much better in memory tests than the control mice. This methodology could thus one fine day actually stop the disease or even reverse Alzheimer’s down to a zero level in its occurrence. That will indeed have been a miracle.

Although the research is premature and needs to be honed further, it is nevertheless a big breakthrough in the history of neurology. The largest hurdle right now is that the injection must be delivered directly into the brain.

This is a little too much as regards interventionist practices. Further investigation may yield novel methods of delivery of this gene therapy. Alzheimer’s afflicts 520,000 people in the UK, according to Telegraph.

Among the symptoms may be included: memory glitches, confusion and mood disorders not to mention personality changes. The person is left the shadow of his or her former self. There is no cure at present.

A modified virus can be delivered directly to the brain cells to wipe out the plaques. It rewrites the code inside the most complex and marvelous organ in the universe.

Thus memory is restored and the patient is brought back from certain ruin and death. This miracle cure is something which is just being looked into right now. The powers of the virus are harnessed for a higher purpose.

This gene therapy has yet to be made safe, secure and 100% efficient. The trials for this method will go into action soon. The day the cure is made a solid reality will signify a milestone in the history of medicine.
