iOS 10 One-Handed Keyboard Enabled and Demo shown on Video

Steve Troughton Smith is currently the most popular iOS tinkerer in the entire world. It there are any secrets to be revealed regarding the iPhone and iPad then he is most likely to be the person to do the job. We were not even remotely surprised when Steve posted a video on twitter which showed unannounced and undocumented one handed keyboard running in an iOS simulator.

Steve believes that the keyboard has been present since iOS 8 which actually means that Apple was most probably working to have it ready when the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were to be released. The iPhone 6 series featured 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch display respectively. The size made many of us worry whether this would make typing difficult for users who were used to smaller displays.

However, for reasons unknown Apple decided not to enable this keyboard feature. The video made by Steve makes us undeniably think this was a mistake. Just through a single swipe from the keyboard edge, all of the keys are moved to one side of the screen which makes it much easy to type single handedly. Function buttons such as cut/copy/paste appear on the other side of the screen for quick access making life easier for text entry.

We do not understand as to why Apple has not made this keyboard available yet especially when it was considering including it since the release of iOS 8. Apple must be planning something regarding it to be used in the future. But we should not be able to guess when users will be able to take advantage of such cool feature such as this. Apple is also speculated to be pondering on the idea of E-Ink based dynamic keyboard for the MacBook 2018 . What’s more, the iPhone 8 is also anticipated to have an edge to edge display which will make the usage of the on-handed keyboard even more interesting.
