Nintendo Switch Will Not Be Able To Play Wii U Discs and 3DS Cartridge

Nintendo has actually disappointed some fans with its Famitsu interview. Nintendo had a talk with the popular Japanese magazine and confessed that its hybrid console will be incapable of playing Wii U discs or 3DS cartridges. We still are not sure whether Switch will be able to run digital games or not.

However if you were hoping that you would be able to play your special 3D titles on a 50 inch screen you may have to control your dreams for now. The gaming giant also clarified that Switch happens to be a brand new platform and in fact is not a direct successor to the Wii U or even the 3DS.

As per a Reddit thread an unknown person asked a Nintendo representative at the Nintendo Investor Relation Q&A whether the console was replacing the 3DS. The representative replied that the company is still thinking on releasing a separate 3DS successor at a different date.

It may be possible that Nintendo is trying to cover up all the bases by merely saying Switch is not a direct 3DS successor. However, the company is capable of releasing one without having to worry about embarrassment if the hybrid ends up as fail just like the Wii U.

Another speculation is that it may be considering a new standalone handheld console. This is great news for those who are immune to hybrid’s magic. An update on this article is that Nintendo representative earlier claimed that the company may release a 3DS successor however Engadget's Japan editor says the exact translation meant something different.

We cannot still confirm Reddit's source and Nintendo hasn’t gotten back to us with details so all we can do now is wait.
