Elon Musk recently answered several poignant questions on Reddit regarding the Mars Base Alpha.

Elon Musk wants to build a city or two on the surface of the Red Planet. This would be a possibility within the next few decades according to Musk. The SpaceX and Tesla Motors CEO spoke on how he would accomplish the monumental task in an SpaceX AMA session on Reddit.

He also plans to test the ITS (Interplanetary Transport System) big fuel tank at sea. In response to a pertinent question, Musk said that the nascent tests showed that there was hope for the future.

He also spoke of how he will have his company’s dedicated staff take the tank up to 2/3 of burst pressure on an oceanic barge within the next few weeks.

Musk is definitely busy cooking up quite a lot in his futuristic planning. The tank that Musk refers to is a proof of concept for a refillable fuel reservoir.

It would be employed to whisk away a spacecraft having a capacity to harbor at least a hundred human beings. They would go on trips between Mars and Earth.

The fuel tank would hold liquid oxygen and another fuel (which would probably be methane). Methane would most likely be made on Mars and it would be utilized to propel the ITS.

As for the flight tank, it will be longer than the development tank. However, the diameters of both will be approximately the same. It will contain cryogenic propellant fuel, according to CNet.

It would not show any leakage and would come without any sealing linker either. SpaceX also tested the Raptor rocket engines. These will be used to get the ITS into space from the starting point which is planet earth.

Elon Musk made mention of how he plans on settling humans on the Red Planet. It is a sophisticated series of maneuvers that will accomplish this historical landmark, according to The Verge.

The current plan has it that Dragon scouting missions will be sent to Mars just to test whether we have the capacity to go to Mars in a safe and secure manner.

Then the Heart of Gold spacecraft will make a beeline for Mars. The third step will have a crewed mission approach the Red Planet. The final step will also have the number of trips doubled so that a city of people could be set up on the surface of Mars within no time.
