It looks like the planet we inhabit is in a state of crisis due to CO2 levels that have skyrocketed.

The level of CO2 in the climate of the earth may have gone past the threshold of no return. The 400 parts per million milestone was broken last year.

In fact, 2016 will probably be the year when this record was broken by a significant margin. Partially, the El Nino phenomenon is responsible for this heat wave that has enveloped the world.

Although the man-made CO2 emissions remained pretty much the same in 2015 and 2016, it was the El Nino phenomenon which caused a rise in levels of the gas in the atmosphere.

"The year 2015 ushered in a new era of optimism and climate action with the Paris climate change agreement," World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Secretary-General Petteri Taalas told BBC. "But it will also make history as marking a new era of climate change reality with record high greenhouse gas concentrations."

The conditions of drought caused by El Nino ensured that no CO2 was absorbed by the vegetation. Also forest fires that raged everywhere caused an addition in these high levels of CO2.

These conditions combined to boost CO2 levels way past the norm seen since the past decade or so. The atmospheric monitoring station in Mauna Loa, Hawaii reported that such similar conditions had only been reached 5 million years ago.

Before the year 1800, CO2 levels were 280ppm. This rise to beyond 400 ppm is a record breaker and not a good sign at all. It shows that some things have simply gone berserk.

Although the El Nino phenomenon is no more, the human contribution of rampant pollution to the world’s air, land and water systems is going on at a brisk pace.

This spells trouble in the long run not just for the rest of the species but for man as well. The Paris Climate Agreement was supposed to remedy this SNAFU, yet it proved to be a case of too little, too late.

Yet some steps are being taken, although they are not being taken with the enthusiasm as they ought to be. For one thing, at least a novel era of agreement on conservation of the planet, rather than unconsciousness regarding man’s role in destroying the earth, has begun.

This in itself is a healthy improvement on the previous times of ignorance regarding climate change. Ultimately, greenhouse gases will be curbed willy nilly.

There is simply no other way out of this mess we seem to have gotten outselves into. Tackling CO2 levels remains at the top of the agenda though.
