Doctor Strange Initial Reviews: What the Critics are Saying?
  • The Initial Reviews for Doctor Strange Paint a Hopeful Picture

The reviews for Marvel Doctor Strange promises that the movie is a successful adaptation of the comics with a few issues.

It was uncertain how the new territory that Marvel was exploring with making the Doctor Strange movie would turn out. Mysticism being a villainous thing in the Marvel Universe and heroes relying on brute force, intelligence and gadgets; it was hard to imagine the Marvel Universe any other way.

So with Disney and Marvel having already achieved this year’s early hit with Captain America Civil War, they need the home run with Doctor Strange since there was no summer release from the studio. So they have approached promoting the movie very smartly even when people were not sure about the story.

In the early opening for critics, the movie seems to have won over the critics. In a movie expected to bomb, the critics seem impressed. They appreciate the performances delivered by the cast of the movie. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the superhero Doctor Strange himself is praised for his performance.

Firstly for delivering a pristine American accent, the critics are calling his performance a tone down from Sherlock but also a combination of Tony Stark from the first Iron Man movie and also a little bit of House from House M.D. They appreciate Cumberbatch commitment and sense of comic relief that he brought to the role which made it likeable and somewhat relatable as well.

The casting call of controversy, Tilda Swinton playing the Ancient One has also been praised for delivering an almost perfect role with little emotion involved. Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius has been called one of Marvel’s better villains and other characters including Mordo played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Wong played by Benedict Wong have been praised for their restraint and expert navigation of their roles in the movie. Rachel McAdams has been praised for her role as Dr Christine Palmer as one of the best love interests in Marvel.

As for the story, the visual effects have been praised for their restraint and use as well. The visual effects have brought the comic to life, according to some critics and they are an absolute delight to watch on the big screen.

The critics have once again pointed out that Marvel’s need for comic relief comes at the cost of character depth and insight. Calling the film somewhat lacking in emotion, the critics have given the movie an A-okay for the audience.
