Huawei Mate 9 Pro With A 4X Optical Zoom Will Cost $1300

The Huawei Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro duo is promising to be quite remarkable. The latest update on the upcoming phablet pair is that they will be having a 4x optical zoom. This top-spec version of the Pro Model will cost an extravagant $1300.

Now putting the prohibitive side on one side, we are very much skeptical as to how a zoom can be integrated in to a Smartphone. Especially without having a sizeable hump.

We have witnessed a periscope arrangement in the Asus Zenfone Zoom but the Mate 9 back does not give such an indication. The Huawei Mate 9 Pro is very thin and has a fingerprint sensor placed where a periscope assembly would have been possibly placed.

Another possible solution to this scenario is the iPhone 7 Plus approach. This would require only one of the lenses to be slightly wider and also say a bit longer almost 20-80mm equiv.

This however is only possible if an 80mm equiv lens can fit in such a form factor. In addition, we may also consider a Nokia 808 Pure View/Lumia take on the zoom spec.

You can initiate with a high-res sensor and then crop the centre portion. The amount of pixels is so high at the beginning that the end image still retains plenty of resolution. This however does not count as optical enough.

The zoom spec would make all the sense in the world of the Mate 9 is coming with the exact camera setup as we have observed in the current Huawei P9. Yet we remain skeptic on this spec.
