Microsoft VR Headsets: Features, Price, Release Date and Everything You Need To Know

The new Microsoft VR headset coming with the release of Windows 10 Creators Update are the secret highlight of the October Surface event.

The new Surface Studio makes the iMac look like ancient computing hardware. The stunning and immersive Studio comes though with a $3,000 price-tag. The new Surface Book i7 is also beyond $2,300. There is though something coming from Microsoft that is cheap, very cheap.

Microsoft and its partners will launched $299 VR headsets with the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update in Spring. Microsoft has not revealed all the details yet about the new VR headsets for Windows 10. The company makes the claim that they are more immersive than the VR headsets selling for more than $500. Microsoft basically says that their VR headsets are only half price and much better than the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Microsoft revealed that the $299 VR Headsets feature inside-out, six-degrees of freedom. Unlike every other virtual reality headset in the market today, there will be zero need for a separate room and complicated setup.

The cheap VR Headsets are also work with affordable laptops and PCs, driving the cost of ownership down.

To put it in perspective, the Microsoft VR headset is $100 cheaper than the Sony PlayStation VR. Sony has now a competitor, especially if the $299 VR headsets work with the Xbox One. Microsoft did not explicitly state that yet.

The announcement of $299 VR Headset will lead to consumers to rethink their VR Headset purchase in the Holiday Season. Oculus and HTC will be pressured to offer steep discounts on their headsets to make a sale.

Update: Microsoft will reveal more details about the $299 VR headsets at an event in December.

$299 VR Headset Brands

Microsoft will not make the $299 VR Headset. HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, and Acer will launch the low-cost VR goggles along with the Windows 10 Creators Update. The VR headsets offered by the different brand might vary in specifications.

$299 VR Headset Specifications

There are no technical details yet available about the resolution or the field of view of the Microsoft Virtual Reality headsets. Microsoft just claims that they are better than today's $500+ options. Microsoft's Alex Kipman revealed some details in an interview to Polygon. The first generation of VR headsets will not support mixed-reality. The headset will have a high FOV and need to be connected to a PC via a cable. The inside-out tracking comes from the HoloLens development.

The inside-out tracking is a huge advantage and no other VR headset is offering six-degree tracking without external sensors. More technical details will be revealed at a Microsoft event in December. There are two scheduled WinHEC 2016 events in Asia that are likely the events the details will be revealed. The first one takes place on December 8 to 8 in Shenzhen, China.

$299 VR Headset Release Date

Microsoft did not reveal a specific date yet for the release of the free Windows 10 Creators Update. It will be early 2017.

Xbox and Microsoft VR Headset

We expect the Microsoft VR Headset to work with the Xbox One. This will give Xbox owners a VR headset for gaming. Microsoft has not mentioned the Xbox in the VR Headset presentation, but it makes a lot of sense. Microsoft will not want customers to buy two VR headset. The $299 Microsoft VR headset will work with Windows 10 PCs and the Xbox. It would be big surprise if not.

We will update this Microsoft VR Headset guide over the next months with new information. If you have questions or tips please email us.
