Ice Cube gets the role of Fagin and contributes to the re-adaptation of the Charles Dickens’ classic Oliver Twist.

When we think of some of the classic tales that everyone might be familiar with, Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist is certainly one of them. Initially published as a serial Oliver Twist between 1837 and 1839, it was adapted into a novel and then was eventually adapted into a musical, Oliver! It premiered on London's West in 1960.

It was later turned into a movie in 1968 directed by Carol Reed. The show has since become a musical theater staple. Disney re-imagined the tale in 1988 as an animated film about stray cats and dogs in New York City called, Oliver and Company.

It has been long enough that the tale of a runaway boy might be re-adapted once more, but with a whole new twist. While reporting the casting of the re-adaptation, Ice Cube was confirmed to play the role of the elderly caretaker of the thieves Oliver hides with, Fagin, acording to THR

He will also serve as the producer and the collaborator with co-producer Jeff Kwatinetz who is writing the musical.

This will be Kail’s debut on the big screen. Judging by this band of people that have gathered and some information given by the project, there will be a whole new twist to this classic tale. It will go and tap into many genres including hip hop which the writers will pay special attention to.

Oliver Twist seems timeless with its tale of a boy living in poverty and runs away from his oppression. The story might resonate still with many young boys and a hip hop makeover might give it the same attraction as Hamilton did for its audience.
