Microsoft Beats Apple In Innovation Ahead of Apple Event

Can Apple counter the Microsoft Event today?

I never considered going back to Windows after switching years ago until yesterday. The Surface Studio is taking desktop computing to the future. Microsoft just did Apple's job. Back in 2013 Apple's Phil Schiller said after introducing the new Mac Pro, "Can’t innovate anymore, my ass." Well. He better is saying that today again.

Microsoft just unveiled a huge attack on the professional creative marked with the Surface Studio. The new Surface Studio is a device that transforms from a workstation into a digital canvas, unlocking a more natural and immersive way to create on the thinnest LCD monitor ever built. With a stunning ultra-HD 4.5K screen, Surface Studio delivers 63 percent more pixels than a state-of-the-art 4K TV. Surface Studio works beautifully with pen, touch and Surface Dial, a new input device designed for the creative process that lets you use two hands on the screen to compose and create in all new ways.

The gasp moment in Microsoft's Surface Studio presentation happened when the Surface Dial was placed on the screen and the user interface reacted to the physical presence of the dial. I did not have such a moment in a long time during unveil events. This was just a big surprise. It's a stunning new way to connect with the digital world.

The Surface Studio starts at $2,999, which is wha a high-end 27-inch iMac sells for. A fully tricked out Surface Studio costs a whopping $4,199. For professionals the price does not matter if they get a digital tool they can get emerged in to create their work. The 28-inch Surface Studio is proof that touchscreen on a desktop computer makes a lot of sense.

The problem for Apple is that not only did Apple unveil the future of desktop computing, but also a new paradigm with the full adoption of 3D from creation to consumption. Apple support of 3D and virtual reality is zero to date. Microsoft is set to swamp the VR market with affordable $299 VR headsets when Windows 10 Creators Edition launches. Consumers will create an abundance of 3D content with the new Paint 3D app. 3D is going to happen on Windows and not macOS unless something surprising happens today.

Microsoft also had with Panos Panay, Corporate VP of Devices, a rockstar on stage. Panay has sold the Surface story that tops many of Apple's past presentation. He made the Microsoft event a memorable event - maybe one for the history books. Let's see what Apple can come up with today. The Apple event takes place at 10am PDT.
