Star Wars: Rogue One Villain Details Revealed
  • Details About the Villain of Rogue One Surface

Director Gareth Edwards talks about the brand new villain Orson Krennic and what to expect from Ben Mendelsohn’s interpretation of the character.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is somewhat a new yet familiar territory for the most devout fans of the intergalactic series. As much as the fans love the heroes and protagonists of the series, they also love their villains in the movies. From Tarkin to Darth Vader to Jabba the Hutt to Kylo Ren. The stories would not seem so iconic without iconic villains to thicken the plot.

In this year’s Rogue One story, we go into the past before the series actually started. The time before the imminent threat of Death Star became clear, Erso Jyn and a band of warriors set out to steal the plans for the weapon that could destroy them all. These plans later help Luke Skywalker and Leia to destroy the Death Star in the first trilogy.

So we might not get to see the iconic characters in the movie but we did get a glimpse of Tarkin who went on to become Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. The villain of prominence in the trailer and the teasers is actually the character Orson Krennic.

This character is relatively unknown and director Gareth Edwards shed some light on this new villain to help the fans know him better. Other than getting the “I will destroy you” face and a pristine, white cape; Krennic is the director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial military which makes him responsible for Death Star.

He uses his leverage with Galen Erso to get him to contribute to developing the Death Star. It was revealed that Krennic saved Galen and his family’s life at one point. He is determined to get to a higher rank in his life but he hits a brick wall in the ascension of his career where they do not let him get to the top over Tarkin.

Edwards also revealed that Ben Mandelsohn who is playing Krennic asked if he should adopt a “posh English accent” as other villains in the Star Wars universe had. Edwards said that he told him not to because they wanted to press his mediocrity in the meritocracy system of the Empire.

Edwards speculated that these little details will make people hate the Empire somewhat more. This presents a scenario where we will see the Empire’s classist system through the eyes of a villain. It will be a new perspective for sure.
