How Bad Was the Apple Event Compared to the Microsoft Event

Apple just faded away as innovator in computing.

Apple just unveiled the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. It is a nice laptop. It is all good, but the touch bar is kind of ridiculous compared to the experience the new Microsoft Surface Studio offers. The MacBook Pro Touch Bar comes across fiddly when compared with the lean in interaction the Surface Studio offers.

The people on stage used their pointing finger to move left and right the Touch Bar. It looked uncool. Users of the Surface Studio emerge themselves into the 28-inch digital window. The difference is mind blowing. Yes. The new MacBook Pro has a giant touchpad, but it still is disconnected to the content.

Apple did surprise only with an app in today's event. The TV app was not on the radar, but then again it is just an app. Microsoft stunned with the Surface Dial and amazed with the Surface Studio. I do not need to get into the nitty gritty how the new Surface Book i7 stacks up with the new MacBook Pro. There will be a lot of discussion about that going forward, but it is not meaningful. The important issue is how Apple is innovating in a small box and Microsoft goes outside the box.

Not only did Microsoft innovate with the Surface Studio, but the upcoming support of 3D in Windows 10 Creators update could be a game changer.

Apple needs to pick up the pace. The iPhone 7 is great. Microsoft somehow does not know who to make a smartphone. Maybe in 2017 Panos Panay gets around and makes one. If he is out-doing Apple as he did with the Surface Studio, the Surface Phone could kill the iPhone.

Update: The above was my immediate reaction after seeing the Apple event. Now others have come forward slamming Apple after the initial hype around the new MacBook Pro. I knew right away that the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is a big miss. For a more indepth look at why that is read Owen Williams piece on Medium titled: "Apple just told the world it has no idea who the Mac is for."
