Jennifer Lopez has been confirmed to star in the 2017 Live Musical Bye Bye Birdie.

In a recent panel interview at the Paley Centre, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt talked about the confirmed adaptation of Hairspray into a live musical.

He also confirmed that they were already confirmed about the next musical that they will be adapting. Moreover, it was the idea of one of the most iconic actresses and singers in Hollywood, Jennifer Lopez.

According to Greenblatt, Jennifer Lopez, who is affiliated with the network currently with her role in the show Shades of Blue, came to him with the idea of doing a musical of Bye Bye Birdie.

According to THR, he said that Jennifer came to the studios and told them that she loved the movie and she wanted to do it. Greenblatt said that he asked if Jennifer would want to do it live and she agreed wholeheartedly.

Jennifer said in her own statement that she was a big fan of the Broadway musicals and she had grown up on them. She felt great to be a part of the NBC family and she was glad that they were doing an adaptation of Bye Bye Birdie as it was one of her most favourite movies.

The singer-actress-producer will star as Rosie and executive produce the Universal Television live musical alongside Nuyorican Productions' Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and her manager, Benny Medina.

The NBC's Bye Bye Birdie Live will be based on the 1960 Tony-winning Broadway musical. Starring Dick Van Dyke as Albert Peterson and Chita Rivera as Rosie, the musical was later on adapted into a feature film starring Van Dyke and Janet Leigh as Rosie.

Greenblatt said that Jennifer’s interest in the musical was testament that musicals were very much an entertainment source for the whole family. He said that singing and dancing in Rosie’s role which was originally done by Chita Rivera, was Jennifer’s idea. For NBC, Bye Bye Birdie will mark its fifth holiday live musical event.
