SpaceX has finally pinpointed the real reason behind its rocket explosion.

The previous month, SpaceX made it to the top front page of the newspapers due to its rocket explosion. The site was Cape Canaveral in Florida. This was a big shock for SpaceX since on board that rocket was Facebook’s first satellite.

This satellite cost $195 million which is quite a large amount of money. Finally, though the real reason behind the rocket explosion has been uncovered.

The investigation took place courtesy of representatives from SpaceX, NASA, FAA and the US Air Force. The trail led to three helium pressure vessels in the upper part of the rocket.

Termed composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) they are basically a part of the cryogenic helium system. In fact, the investigators have copied what went wrong to see if that was exactly what had happened in the first place.

Before this, the suspected reason was the flaw in the cryogenic helium system. Via intensive testing, SpaceX can recreate the conditions of the COPV fiasco.

The explosion took place during a standard tank repletion. What that means is that the engines were not on. The substitute heat source that became the cause of the explosion is something that SpaceX has been on the lookout for.

Now though it seems that the flaw was due to small changes that added up. These changes occurred in the temperature and pressure conditions inside the tank. This is a source of worry for SpaceX.

Had the flaw been found in the form of bad wiring, malpractice or even hanky panky on some technician’s part, it would have easily been remediable. Yet such was hardly the case. Therefore, SpaceX is left with two tasks which are mighty difficult to see through.

One is the replication of the explosion and the other one is the redesigning of the cryogenic helium system. The thing is to make sure that such a costly accident doesn’t occur in the future.

The time span during which the explosion took place was so narrow – merely 93 milliseconds – that the pinpointing of the factor that went into it is a monumental challenge.

A long and rocky road lies ahead for SpaceX which will have to see to it that any future launches take place in a safe and secure setting. It is grounded for now till the full implications of the inquiry reach a definite conclusion.

SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk is keeping his fingers crossed and knocking on wood as far as the future success or failure of his space agency is concerned.
