VRMark Virtual Reality Benchmark Launched

Find out if you need a new PC for the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive Virtual Reality headsets.

Futuremark has started to develop a VR benchmark tool in 2015. Now the VRMark tool is available for download. The Virtual Reality benchmark uses a combination of software and hardware to measure performance, latency, and accuracy. The VRMark benchmark will test a Windows 10 PCs ability to deliver high quality virtual reality experiences for a range of content types from photos and video to games and simulations.

The performance requirements for VR games are much higher than for typical PC games. So if you're thinking about buying an HTC Vive or an Oculus Rift, you can use VRMark to find out if you need a new PC or new components.

VRMark includes two VR benchmark tests that run on your monitor, no headset required. At the end of each test, you'll see whether your PC is VR ready, and if not, how far it falls short.

Futuremark offers a free basic version to test your PC for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive use. The VRMark Advanced Edition sells for $14.99 and unlocks more customization options and the Blue Room benchmark for high-performance PCs. Downloads of the VRMark tools are available on futuremark's site.

If your PC does not qualify to be used for the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, you have the option to wait for the lower cost Microsoft VR headsets that come in Spring. These new VR headsets are according to Microsoft less demanding on PC hardware.

It is a good time to test your PC now as early Black Friday 2016 sales are underway for instance on NewEgg. You can find deals on new high-performance graphics cards and RAM modules in the 72-hour NewEgg Black Friday sale.
