  • Review of Marvel’s Doctor Strange

The reviews for Marvel’s latest movie Doctor Strange are in and we see a range of opinion about the movie and characters

The latest Marvel movie Doctor Strange starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Doctor Strange are set to hit the theatres this Friday. The movie has already done considerably well in the international market. Hoping to make a great impact on the U.S. box office and the rest of the international box office as well, Disney and Marvel are hoping to hit a homerun with this movie.

The critics have been giving their reviews for the movie before the audience can turn up at the theatres. The predictions for the movies were somewhat mixed before the movie was released. The character and the story of Doctor Strange are essentially based around mysticism and inter-dimensional travel.

Where inter-dimensional travel is a well visited topic in the DC Comic Universe, it remains unexplored in the Marvel Universe. The movie adaptations of the Marvel features till now have concentrated more on grit and guts with a little help of the supernatural elements. So a complete dive into a character which relies on magic to fight evil was something new for Marvel to explore. Furthermore, many believed that the established rules for making Marvel movie will fail in addressing the complexity required for the movie.

Doctor Strange has till now managed to obtain a satisfactory range of reviews from most critics and commentators. There are reviews that reflect high opinion for the movie while other reflect that the movie could have been so much more.

The movie is basically an origin story, like so many others, of the hero from the Marvel Universe Doctor Strange. At the start of the story, Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of Dr. Stephen Strange. A brilliant and ruthless surgeon who seems devoid of human emotion. He is somewhat humanized by the presence of his love interest Christine Palmer played brilliantly by Rachel McAdams.

In an unfortunate accident due to texting while driving makes the doctor lose his precious surgically gifted hands and he sets out to seek a cure for his declining life in Kathmandu. With the help of a recovered paraplegic, Pangborn, he is guided to Kamar-Taj. Kamar Taj is the home of the Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton which drew a lot of controversy.

The Ancient One tells the Doctor that the world he lives in is not the only one and shows him the multiverse and phenomenon beyond scientific explanation. The Doctor is then taught in the arts of mysticism under the Ancient One and a companion in Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo. He is inadvertently caught in the evil conspiracy instigated by a rogue student of the Ancient One named Kaecilius played by Mads Mikkelsen.

The visual effects of the movie have been admired by critics and audience alike. They are not claimed to be new and unseen. The scenes of Paris folding in dimensions is very similar to the visual perception presented in Nolan’s Inception. The visual effects and the mystical settings are the first ever presented by Marvel. The advanced visual effects and CGI animation enhances the quality of the frames in the Marvel team’s able hands.

The actors have all been praised in their own capacity. Benedict Cumberbatch who has proven himself time and again as an able actor tweaks the comedic puns along the length of the entire movie. Some have praised him for his command of the facial expressions, his comedic timing and the diversity of emotions that he had to express with the changing circumstances of the Doctor.

While her casting might have caused a controversy, Tilda Swinton’s weirdness shines through in her role of the Ancient One. Supposedly an Asian character in the comic books, the Marvel studio wanted to break the race-wise casting stereotype. Rachel McAdam’s performance has been praised and many have demanded more screen time for her.

Ejiofor’s Mordo has also been praised for his deliverance of sarcastic humor delivered with perfect seriousness. While the actors have been praised for their performances, two things have been claimed to be their undoing of the whole film. Marvel’s compulsion to keep the humor in every movie and the story itself in general.

Critics have pointed out that the cast’s performance was sometimes dragged in the movie due to the requirement of delivering a humorous pun throughout the movie. That combined with the very well-known scenario of origin story dragged the movie plot.

Most critics are appreciative of Marvel’s first attempt in the genre. They are appreciative that the studio and director Scott Derrickson efforts in making a movie that is not a typical Marvel story. Furthermore, the movie has also been hailed as a fresh change from the typical Marvel movies that we have seen in the previous 14 movies released by the studio. Overall, the movie has received mixed to positive reviews.
