Netflix had a somewhat surprising hit on its hands when it thrust us all into the Upside Down to take us into the world of Stranger Things. Now the question remains - where do they go from that finale? With 8.2 million people watching season 1 in just sixteen days, there is a lot at stake when it comes to making the second season just as popular.

Season 2 didn't even need to be confirmed for us to know it was going to happen - but what we don't know is where the show will go.

Check out this first shot from the first table read for the second season to get a hint:

The photo confirms that Millie Bobby Brown will return as the beloved Eleven for the second season.

Stranger Things Season 2 Release Date

Stranger Things will have a second season arrive in 2017. While there aren't any firm details yet, we will let you know when we have more.

Stranger Things Season 2 Trailer

As part of the Season 2 reveal, they made up a pretty cool teaser that would reveal the episode titles as well:

It is styled like a 1980s-style news report covering the events of the first season and giving clues to season 2.

And while it isn't a trailer, this properly 1980s-styled news report covering the events of season one might also hold a couple of clues for season two:

Stranger Things Season 2 Storyline

Season one of Stranger Things took place in November 1983, while season 2 will take place in Fall 1984.

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creators and showrunners the Duffer Brothers said that James Cameron is one of the biggest influencers on season 2: "I think one of the reasons his [James Cameron's] sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original," Matt Duffer said. "So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”

The second season will also reveal more about the Upside Down, according to the interview. "We obviously have this gate to another dimension, which is still very much open in the town of Hawkins," Matt Dawkins said. "And a lot of questions there in terms of, if the Monster is dead, was it a singular monster? What else could be out there?"

They also promised that season 2 will have a similar approach. They will look deeper into 1980's mythology and will even leave the town of Hawkins. Of course, we will likely return to the Upside Down.

Executive producer Shawn Levy spoke with Southern California Public Radio, and promises they will impress. "It’s scary to have people love something this much," he said (transcribed quotes via Collider). "It becomes impossible to banish all thoughts of not wanting to disappoint. This has been the challenge of it: on the one hand as we’ve see in the movie world, to do a follow-up that feels like the same thing is disappointing to an audience; to abandon things or change things [from the original], that disappoints the audience."

Stranger Things Season 2 Characters

There will be three new characters this season that will play a huge part in the story, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Sadie Sink as Max, who is a "tough and confident girl whose appearance, behavior and pursuits seem more typical of boys than of girls in this era. She has a complicated history and is generally suspicious of those around her."

Dacre Montgomery will play Billy, who is "Max's hyper-confident and edgy older step-brother. He steals girlfriends away from their boyfriends, is great at drinking games and drives a black Camaro. But lurking under his apparent charisma, is a violent and unpredictable nature."

There will also be Roman, a gender-neutral thirty-something. This person suffered "a great loss at an early age.”

Stranger Things Season 2 Episodes

One of the best pieces of news we have is that there will be nine episodes this year, more than in season 1. Here are the titles:

  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 1: Madmax
  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 2: The Boy Who Came Back to Life
  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 3: The Pumpkin Patch
  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 4: The Palace
  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 5: The Storm
  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 6: The Pollywog
  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 7: The Secret Cabin
  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 8: The Brain
  • Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 9: The Lost Brother

Of course, these are all subject to change, if need be.
